He begins with an excellent encapsulation of early Slavic forays into Siberia in introducing his travels. An exemplary linguist which gave him unique access to the native language of the Buriat and Slavs, an intrepid traveler and astute observer of man and nature, Curtin provides a very readable and exciting account of his journeys in the first section, and a well-developed anthology of mythological and folklore tales he gathered during his travels in the second. Unfortunately the map of Siberia and numerous photographs taken during his travels might have reproduced more largely and with better quality, but they are still interesting to view. This is a worthwhile account of the Buriats at the turn of the 20th Century, more importantly, an accounting and preserving of their mythological tales, folk-lore tales, and Shamanic practices.
